The day Prince died

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

i was flipping quarters

off my elbow

drinking jungle juice

to push me

through the grey hue of the dirty

weather day

there are flowers on my desk

i know who they are from

do you?

breaking news

the basketball stars are sleeping

with the teeny boppers

down by the river

somebody says something about

camping in the backyard

and the windows shake as the cement

trucks speed by

i sat alone on my lunch break

when was the last time anybody

really thought about him?

i can’t sing

but rain has been sitting in the sky

all afternoon

will you think of me little darling

the day i collapse?

girls begin gathering in the bathroom

crying about boys

and i’ve decided i don’t like the word

compound or people pretending to be sad

about the news

catch your flight out of abilene

come home tonight

let’s watch the river turn

purple

let’s talk about the music

our mothers like

let’s live this way forever
